Readers are taken on a guessing-game tour of tide pool residents, from the ‘opihi (limpet) to the hā‘ue‘ue (pencil urchin). He Iʻa Wau features close-up, abstract illustrations of i‘a on one page and then allows young readers to identify the sea creatures on the next page. This bilingual “flip-over” book tells the same story in English and ‘ōlelo Hawai‘i.
This story was written and illustrated by students of Kanu o ka ‘Āina New Century Public Charter School, located in rural Waimea in the Kohala district of Hawai‘i Island. Originally printed in 2005, the revised edition also features an updated cover design.
